Better Speech and Hearing Month – Featuring Speech Language Therapy
May is Better Speech and Hearing Month, a time to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of speech-language therapy in helping individuals overcome them. Speech-language therapy (SLT) is a field that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of speech, language and communication disorders. SLTs work with individuals of all ages and backgrounds to help them develop and improve their communication skills. Starting June 2023 – we will again be offering this therapy option for inquiring families.
One of the main benefits of speech language therapy is that it can help your child overcome communication challenges that may be holding them back in various aspects of their lives. For children, speech and language disorders can impact their ability to learn, play, and socialize with others.
SLT’s use evidence-based techniques to assess and treat a wide variety of communication disorders. These techniques may include:
- Articulation therapy: This involves working on the production of specific speech sounds and improving overall speech clarity.
- Language therapy: This focuses on improving the understanding and use of language including grammar, vocabulary and sentence structure.
- Fluency therapy: This helps individuals who stutter or have other fluency disorders to speak more smoothly and with greater ease.
- Voice therapy: This is designed to improve the quality and health of the voice, including pitch, volume and resonance.
Research has shown that speech-language therapy can be highly effective in improving communication skills and overall quality of life for individuals with communications disorders. A 2018 study published in the Journal of Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in schools found that children who received speech language therapy made significant gains in their speech and language skills compared to those that did not receive therapy.
